All of the opportunities listed below include a stipend. Housing and transportation costs may or may not be included. Please check each website to find more information about each individual program’s funding.
Community College Internships
Community College Internships (CCI) Program
Description: Technical training experiences at one of 16 participating Department of Energy (DOE) laboratories. Work on technologies or instrumentation projects or major research facilities supporting DOE’s mission, under the guidance of laboratory staff scientists or engineers.

Science Undergraduate Laboratory Internships (SULI) Program*
Description: Intern at one of 17 participating DOE laboratories/facilities. Perform research, under the guidance of laboratory staff scientists or engineers, on projects supporting the DOE mission.

Length: 10 week Summer Term (May-Aug); 16 week Fall or Spring Term (Aug-Dec or Jan-May)

Undergraduate Internships
Science Undergraduate Laboratory Internships (SULI) Program*

NREL Student Training in Applied Research (STAR) Internship
Description: A program connecting students and faculty with NREL's team to foster a future generation of industry leaders and sustained research engagement. The mission in STAR is to diversify the clean energy workforce and build partnerships with minority serving institutions.
Participating LiSA Institutions: NREL
Length: 10 week summer term (May 22 - July 28) with 9 months of follow-on work with faculty mentor at home institution

Caltech Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowships (SURF) Program
Description: Conduct research at Caltech under the guidance of experienced mentors working at the frontier of their fields. Includes weekly seminars, an academic and professional development series, writing workshops, social events, field trips, and more.

Caltech WAVE Fellowship
Description: Conduct research under the guidance of Caltech faculty working at the frontier of their fields. This program is extended, but not limited to racially minoritized communities, women (in certain fields), first-generation college students, geographically underrepresented students, educationally or financially disadvantaged students, and students with disabilities. All applicants will be considered without regard to race or gender. Includes weekly seminars, an academic and professional development series, writing workshops, social events, field trips, and more.

Caltech Amgen Scholars Program
Description: The Amgen Scholars Program is a national program aimed at increasing research opportunities for students committed to pursuing careers in the sciences. At Caltech, we provide visiting students the opportunity to conduct research in biology, chemistry, and bio-technical related fields under the guidance of some of the world's leading academic scientists. Research projects, along with scientific seminars, workshops, and networking events, prepare participants to pursue a Ph.D. or the joint M.D./Ph.D. degree and research careers in the sciences and biotechnology.

University of California - Irvine Chemistry Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (Chem-SURF)
Description: Summer research opportunity for undergraduate students to gain valuable research experience in an academic setting. Participants will engage in original research guided by faculty mentors in UCI’s state-of-the-art research facilities. As part of the program, the REU students will attend presentations, workshops, and seminars related to career planning, industry, and applying to graduate school.

University of Oregon Environmental Summer Research in Chemistry, Physics and Materials Science
Description: Summer undergraduate research program for Physics and Chemistry majors to participate in a wide variety of exciting research projects. It’s not all work, however. Having local and regional adventures are a vital component of the program.

Graduate Internships
Office of Science Graduate Student Research (SCGSR) Program
Description: Supplemental awards to outstanding U.S. graduate students (US citizens or lawful permanent residents) to pursue part of their graduate thesis research at a DOE laboratory/facility in areas that address scientific challenges central to the Office of Science mission.

Length: 3-12 months
