LiSA 2024 All Hands Meeting
LiSA recently held its annual all hands meeting, bringing researchers from all five institutions together to network and collaborate.
Welcome 2024 Sunrise Network Leadership Team!
We would like to welcome and introduce the new members of the Sunrise Network Leadership Team for 2024: Pooja Basera, Grace Chen, Richard Kang, Katie Luedecke, and Jen Urbine who will be joining existing member Zeb Schichtl.
Artificial photosynthesis: A pathway to solar fuels
Recent publication by LiSA Director Harry Atwater featured in Physics Today!
LiSA Outreach at Caltech
LiSA PI John Gregoire hosted students from Pasadena Community College at Caltech on October 20 and 21, where students learned about electrolysis and artificial photosynthesis, including the solar-driven hydrogen electrolyzer demo developed in LiSA.
LiSA WAVE Fellow Returns to Caltech for Grad School
Audrey Washington, who researched as a WAVE student with LISA PI Prof Scott Cushing (Caltech) in 2022, returns to Caltech to pursue graduate research in chemistry. Congratulations, Audrey!

LiSA All Hands Meeting 2022
LiSA held its first in-person all hands meeting in December 2022, bringing researchers from all five institutions together for the first time since the project started in 2020.
LiSA Summer Research Panel
LiSA's Sunrise Network hosted a Summer Research Application Panel on November 8, 2022 for students from minority serving institutions (MSI), where panelist offered guidance on applying for internships in renewable energy research.
LiSA Researchers Teach Artificial Photosynthesis to Elementary Students
Students in LiSA’s Sunrise Network at LBNL developed kits to introduce artificial photosynthesis and solar water splitting to elementary students. These kits were introduced to 5th grade students in Bay Area schools and are designed to provide a hands-on demonstration of artificial photosynthesis. Introducing electrochemistry to students earlier in their curriculum will enable the growth and development the next-generation energy workforce!
Captura, founded by LiSA researchers Harry Atwater and CX Xiang, Nabs XPRIZE Award
Captura, a new company founded by LiSA researchers Harry Atwater and CX Xiang, was awarded the XPRIZE Carbon Removal competition. Bipolar membranes used in Captura’s technology originated in their LiSA research. [Read article]
LiSA welcomes five new co-PIs
LiSA is very pleased to announce that we have 5 new co-PIs who have joined LiSA in Year 2. They are Dan Miller (LBNL, Systems & Integration team), Karthish Manthiram (Caltech, Microenvironments team), Adam Schwartzberg (LBNL, Photodynamics team), Shaul Aloni (LBNL, Photoactive Materials team), and Anne Greenaway (NREL) who is moving to a co-PI role in the Photoactive Materials team. We are delighted to have our new co-PIs and researchers with us and hope you will be able to take time soon to learn about their work.
